Message from Mayor

Dear Guests,

In today’s conditions, cities must develop resilient and sustainable solutions in response to rapidly changing socio-economic dynamics, the climate crisis, migration, and public health challenges. What truly makes a city livable and sustainable is a future vision shaped by human-centered planning, environmental awareness, and inclusive policies. The World Health Organization (WHO) has been leading the European Healthy Cities Network since 1988 with precisely this approach, playing a crucial role in making cities healthier, more equitable, and more resilient.

Bursa, with its rich historical and cultural heritage, natural beauty, and dynamic urban structure, stands as a unique city that bridges the past and the future. As the first capital of the Ottoman Empire, Bursa is home to invaluable historical sites such as the Hanlar District, Sultan Complexes, and the village of Cumalıkızık, which were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014. Our district of İznik, which hosted the First Council of Nicaea, holds a significant place in Christian history. Iconic landmarks such as the Green Tomb, the Grand Mosque, and Koza Han reflect the spirit of the city. Moreover, Bursa, located at the foothills of Uludağ, is renowned for its natural landscape, thermal waters, and fertile lands, making it a center for healthy living.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of our Republic, envisioned Bursa as a leading city in history, industry, production, and natural beauty. His contemporary, egalitarian, and people-oriented governance approach continues to guide us today. As Bursa Metropolitan Municipality, we are committed not only to preserving our historical heritage but also to supporting it with sustainable urban development and public health-oriented policies. In line with this commitment, we have actively participated in the WHO European Healthy Cities Network since 2003, embracing the principles of healthy, resilient, and inclusive urbanism.

It is with great pride that we will host the WHO European Healthy Cities Network Annual Business Meeting and Technical Conference in Bursa from June 17-19, 2025. This significant event, themed “Resilient Healthy Cities: Creating Sustainable Urban Futures for All,” will bring together policymakers, academics, and urban health professionals from across Europe.

Discussions at the conference will focus on climate change adaptation, public health, inclusive urban policies, and resilient urban development, offering a crucial platform for building healthier and more sustainable cities. This year’s meeting will also mark a key milestone in the transition to Phase VIII of the WHO European Healthy Cities Network, evaluating past achievements while setting strategic goals for the future.

We warmly welcome all those who wish to contribute to this great gathering. Together, let us build a healthier and more resilient future.

Mustafa BOZBEY
Mayor of Bursa Metropolitan Municipality
